Neurological Conditions
Acupuncture, has been show to help with neurological disorders by stimulating certain nerves and points in the body – which in turn activates the body's natural painkillers, and promotes healing. This practice uses thin needles inserted under the skin (at specific points) to stimulate the body's energy, called chi, and relieve pain or treat various conditions.
For neurological disorders, acupuncture has been shown to increase circulation and oxygen to the brain and reduce inflammation caused by neurological conditions. Studies have shown that acupuncture can help relieve some of the symptoms of neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, migraines, and multiple sclerosis. This alternative therapy can also help with conditions like numbness, muscle weakness, and neuropathic pain.
That said, acupuncture isn't a cure, and it can't eradicate the root cause of a neurological disorder. Acupuncture may, however, provide symptomatic relief and help improve your overall wellbeing.
Stroke Recovery
Stroke can affect movement, strength, balance, sensation, coordination, speech, swallowing, and the ability to perform everyday activities. Recovery often requires a comprehensive rehabilitation program tailored to the areas of the nervous system and function affected by the stroke.
Acupuncture may be incorporated alongside conventional stroke rehabilitation to support recovery. Clinical research has investigated acupuncture for improving motor function, neurological deficits, swallowing difficulties, and activities of daily living following stroke.
Chinese herbal medicine may also be used as complementary care in selected patients.
Treatment is individualized according to the patient's stage of recovery, neurological deficits, medical history, medications, and rehabilitation goals. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are intended to complement—not replace—medical care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, or other appropriate stroke rehabilitation.
Facial Palsy (Bell's Palsy)
Bell's palsy is a sudden weakness or paralysis of the facial muscles caused by dysfunction of the facial nerve. Symptoms may include facial drooping, difficulty closing the eye, an uneven smile, altered facial sensation, difficulty eating or drinking, and changes in tear or saliva production.
Acupuncture has been studied as a complementary treatment during facial nerve recovery. Clinical trials and systematic reviews suggest potential benefits for facial muscle function, facial symmetry, and overall recovery.
Treatment is individualized according to the stage and severity of facial weakness and may incorporate acupuncture and carefully selected electroacupuncture techniques alongside appropriate medical care and facial rehabilitation.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the joints and may lead to pain, swelling, stiffness, fatigue, and progressive loss of function.
Acupuncture may be used as complementary care alongside conventional rheumatologic treatment. Clinical research has reported potential improvements in joint pain, morning stiffness, tender and swollen joint counts, physical function, and measures of disease activity. Some studies have also reported changes in inflammatory markers such as CRP and ESR, although the strength and consistency of the evidence varies.
Treatment is individualized according to the joints affected, severity of symptoms, disease activity, medications, and overall health. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are intended to complement—not replace—rheumatologic care and disease-modifying medications when medically indicated.
Kidney Disease
Chronic kidney disease can affect the kidneys’ ability to filter the blood and regulate fluid, electrolytes, blood pressure, and metabolic balance. Depending on the stage and underlying cause, patients may experience fatigue, swelling, changes in urination, poor appetite, sleep disturbance, itching, and reduced quality of life.
Acupuncture has been studied as complementary care for people with chronic kidney disease. Clinical research has reported potential improvements in kidney-function measures, symptom burden, and CKD-associated problems such as uremic itching, although the quality of evidence varies and larger, better-controlled studies are still needed.
Chinese herbal medicine has also been investigated alongside conventional treatment. Some clinical studies and systematic reviews have reported potential benefits involving proteinuria, kidney-function markers, and progression-related outcomes in selected patients.
Treatment is individualized according to the cause and stage of kidney disease, symptoms, laboratory findings, medications, and overall medical condition. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are intended to complement—not replace—care from a physician or nephrologist.
Menstrual Irregularities
Menstrual irregularities can include painful periods, irregular or absent cycles, heavy bleeding, unusually light periods, and cycle changes associated with conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or endometriosis.
Acupuncture has been studied for several menstrual and reproductive disorders. Research has reported potential benefits for menstrual pain, cycle regulation, and some hormonal and metabolic abnormalities associated with PCOS. Acupuncture has also been investigated for endometriosis-related dysmenorrhea and pelvic pain.
Chinese herbal medicine may also be incorporated when appropriate. Clinical research has examined individualized herbal treatment for menstrual pain, PCOS-related menstrual disturbances, and other gynecological symptoms, although the quality of evidence varies among conditions and treatments.
Treatment is individualized according to the menstrual pattern, associated symptoms, medical history, medications, laboratory findings, and underlying diagnosis. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are intended to complement appropriate gynecological evaluation and medical care.
Infertility
Infertility can result from many factors, including ovulatory disorders, diminished ovarian function, endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), tubal factors, male-factor infertility, or unexplained causes.
Acupuncture has been studied as complementary care for female and male infertility. Research has investigated its potential effects on ovarian function, reproductive hormones, menstrual and ovulatory function, uterine blood flow, and stress regulation. In men, acupuncture has also been studied for its potential effects on sperm concentration, motility, morphology, and overall semen quality.
Chinese herbal medicine has also been investigated for female infertility, with systematic reviews reporting potential improvements in pregnancy rates and reproductive-function measures, although the quality of the underlying studies varies.
Treatment is individualized according to reproductive history, laboratory findings, menstrual and ovulatory patterns, semen analysis when applicable, underlying diagnoses, and whether natural conception or assisted reproductive treatment is being pursued. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are intended to complement appropriate fertility evaluation and medical care.
Pain & Musculoskeletal Conditions
Musculoskeletal conditions can cause pain, stiffness, weakness, restricted movement, and difficulty performing everyday activities. Common problems include low-back and neck pain, sciatica, shoulder pain, muscle and tendon injuries, joint pain, and osteoarthritis.
Acupuncture and electroacupuncture have been extensively studied for the management of musculoskeletal pain. Large clinical studies and systematic reviews have found improvements in pain and physical function for several chronic pain conditions, including back and neck pain, osteoarthritis, and shoulder pain. Research also suggests that some benefits can persist after a course of treatment has ended.
Treatment is individualized according to the location and cause of pain, physical examination findings, mobility and strength deficits, neurological involvement, and the patient's functional goals. Acupuncture may be combined with electroacupuncture, microcurrent therapy, cupping, and other appropriate rehabilitative approaches as part of an individualized treatment plan.
